The Cobras Shotokan Karate club established in 1996 under the leadership of Sensei Laurent Gaston-Bellegarde and his son Sensei Nicholas Gaston-Bellegarde has been operating in Brackenhurst, Alberton for almost two decades now. Together they continue to take the club to new heights each and every year.

“With loads of international exposure and a total of 36 years of teaching experience between the two of us, we believe we offer invaluable karate instruction that not only produces excellent karate students, but also moulds outstanding individuals”.  – Sensei Laurent & Nicholas

Since inception the Cobras club has been affiliated to the South Africa Shotokan Karate Academy (SASKA) under the leadership of Style Head Shihan Koos Burger (8th Dan). SASKA is a very unique style of Shotokan Karate in that it strives to stick to and maintain the true core values of training this magnificent martial art known as Karate.  Although very traditional in its style, SASKA provides a great platform for its karateka to get both national and international exposure on a competitive level. SASKA have been affiliated to the World Union of Karate-do Federations (WUKF) for many years now, with Shihan Koos Burger currently being the WUKF vice-president and Sensei Laurent Gaston-Bellegarde the WUKF Africa vice-president. For more information on SASKA please visit www.saska.co.za

Like SASKA the Cobras club strive to maintain a very high level of karate training at all times. We are a very competitive club that has excelled at a lot of competitions locally, nationally and internationally. However we continually train our students to have a better understanding of karate and to ultimately achieve the perfection of mastering this martial art as a means of self defence.

As father and son, we have been training together in excess of 26 years now and teaching together for 18. The family bond it has created between us is magnificent and we try to carry across these same values when we teach our students. We see the Cobras Club as one big family which seems to grow stronger each year.

Karate is not only a form of self defence, but does wonders for an individual’s self confidence, discipline, physical and mental well being and self control. Over the years the Cobras club has produced many fantastic karateka and we believe that with our level of dedication, experience and expertise, we have the ability to transform any student young and old alike, into the best version of themselves, both physically and mentally.
